Chapter 1 of the Numbers Book describes the Census of Men of Israel who were able to fight in war. The purpose of this census was to determine how many men were in each tribe that were in a military age and therefore would be eligible to fight for the nation of Israel. Numbers 26:2 - "Takes the census of the entire congregation of the children of Israel since the age of twenty years, according to the houses of parents, all who can go out to war in Israel."
