57. The children of Solomon's servants: the children of Sotai, the children of Sophereth, the children of Perida,
Nehemiah 7 reports the organization of the people after the reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah is in charge of selecting leaders and establishing a genealogical record of the people who returned from Babylonian exile. He names Hanani and Hananias to supervise the city and the gates, and also designates guards to protect the city. Below are five verses related to the topics covered in Nehemiah 7:
Nehemiah 7:5: "And my God put in my heart together the nobles, the officers, and the people so that they could be recorded by genealogy." Nehemiah begins the process of genealogical registration of the people who returned from exile.
Ezra 2:59-60: "These were the ones who climbed Tel-Melá, Tel-Harsá, Cherub, Adom and Imer, but could not prove that their families and their descendants were from Israel: descendants of Delaías, the children of Tobias and the descendants of Neco. " This verse is on the list of people who returned from Babylonian exile, but could not prove their genealogy.
Ezra 2:62: "They sought their genealogical record, but they did not find it, so they were excluded from the priesthood as unclean." This verse talks about those who could not prove their genealogy, and therefore were excluded from the priesthood.
Nehemiah 7:2: "I put my brother Hanani, and Hananiah, leader of the palace, over Jerusalem, because he was a faithful man and feared God more than many others." Nehemiah chooses reliable leaders to supervise the city and the gates.
Nehemiah 7:3: "And I said unto them, Do not open the doors of Jerusalem until the sun is hot, and while the porters are still there, lock the doors and lock them while they are still in Guard. I named some of Jerusalem's inhabitants as guards and also attribute to each one a section of the wall to repair. " Nehemiah names guards to protect the city and designates sections of the wall to be repaired by each of them.
