Job, 25

1. Then Bildad the Shuhite answered:

2. "Dominion and fear are with God; he makes peace in his high heaven.

3. Is there any number to his armies? Upon whom does his light not arise?

4. How then can man be righteous before God? How can he who is born of woman be clean?

5. Behold, even the moon is not bright and the stars are not clean in his sight;

6. how much less man, who is a maggot, and the son of man, who is a worm!"

Job chapter 25 is one of the book's smallest sections, consisting of only six verses. In it, Bildy, one of Job's friends, responds to Job's questioning and presents his perspective on divine justice and the insignificance of humanity before God. Psalm 144:3-4: "Lord, who is man, that you may know him, or the Son of man, that man is? The man is like a breath; his days are like the shadow that passes." This psalm also presents the idea that humanity is fragile and ephemeral, in contrast to the eternity of God.

Job 9:2-3: "In fact I know that it is this; how can man be justified to God? If he wants to contend with him, a thousand things will not answer one." In this verse, Job expresses his understanding that it is impossible for man to justify himself before God and that it is no use arguing with him, for God is superior and incomprehensible to the human mind.
