2 Samuel 5 narrates the unification of the tribes of Judah and Israel under the reign of King David. The chapter begins with the leaders of Israel coming to David in Hebrom to recognize him as his king after the death of Saul. Genesis 49:10: "The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the command rod among his descendants, until he comes to whom he belongs, and to him the nations will obey." Isaiah 9:6-7: "For a boy was born to us, a son has been given to us, and the government is upon his shoulders. And he will be called the wonderful counselor, powerful God, eternal father, prince of peace. Government and peace there will be no end on the throne of David and on his kingdom, to firm and fortify him with judgment and justice, from now on and forever. " This verse is a prophecy about the Messiah that would come from the lineage of David. The unification of the tribes of Israel under the reign of David is a foreshadowing of the Eternal Government of the Messiah over all nations.
