1 Maccabees, 1

10. There sprang from these a sinful offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus, once a hostage at Rome. He became king in the year one hundred and thirty-seven of the kingdom of the Greeks.

The book of 1 Maccabees narrates the history of the Jews in the intertestamentary period, between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament. Chapter 1 describes the desecration of the temple of Jerusalem by King Antiochus Epiphanius IV and his attempt to impose Greek culture and religion on the Jews. Jeremiah 25:9-11: "Behold, I will send, and take to all the northern tribes, says the Lord, and the Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land, and against their residents, and and, and Against all these nations around, and I will totally destroy them, and make them object of astonishment, and whistle, and perpetual desert.
