4. And Jesus answered him: It is written, that Man liveth not by bread alone, but by every word of God.

In Luke 4, Jesus is tempted by the devil in the desert and begins his prosecutor in Galilee. The chapter also presents the rejection of Jesus in his hometown, Nazareth, and his teaching and healing in Capernaum.

Deuteronomy 6:13 - "Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and thou shalt only serve, and shall swear by his name." This verse is quoted by Jesus in response to one of the devil's temptations, where He offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship. The devil quotes this verse in trying Jesus to jump from the Temple pinnacle to prove that God would save him. Jesus answers that he should not try the Lord his God.

Isaiah 53:4 - "Truly he took our sickness upon Himself and carried our pains; and we reputed him for distress, wounded to God and oppressed." This verse is quoted by Luke to explain how Jesus' healing were a way of fulfilling the messianic prophecy of Isaiah 53:4 that the Messiah would carry the diseases and pains of his people.
