25. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the Church and handed himself over for her,
Chapter 5 of Ephesians deals with Christian conduct in relation to love, purity and submission. Paul emphasizes the importance of following Christ's example and being full of the Holy Spirit, avoiding sexual immorality, corrupted words and impure attitudes. In addition, he instructs the role of her husband and wife in marriage and urges Christians to live in harmony and unity as members of the body of Christ. Following are five verses from other Bible books that relate to the topics covered in Ephesians 5.
Proverbs 10:19: "Not much to speak is not lacking transgression, but what moderates the lips is prudent." This verse emphasizes the importance of moderation in words, something Paul also addresses in Ephesians 5:4. He warns Christians so that they do not speak corrupted, obscene or foolish words, but to say what is good and edifying to others.
Colossians 3:18: "You, women, submit to your husbands, as it suits the Lord." As with Ephesians 5, Paul instructs women to submit to their husbands in a loving and voluntary way. He points out that this submission is a way of honoring Christ and contributing to unity in marriage.
1 Peter 3:7: "Also, husbands, cohabiting with them with understanding, giving honor to women, as a weaker vessel; as you are their coercers of the grace of life; so that your prayers may not be prevented." Peter also instructs the husbands to be loving and respectful with their wives, something Paul addresses in Ephesians 5:25-33.
1 Thessalonians 5:23: "And the same God of peace sanctifies you in everything; and all your Spirit, and soul, and body be fully dismantled for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." This verse highlights the importance of sanctification and purity, themes that Paul also emphasizes in Ephesians 5:3-14.
Romans 12:5: "So we, who are many, are one body in Christ, but individually we are members of each other." Paul urges Christians in Ephesians 5:21 to subject each other in the fear of Christ, recognizing that they are all members of the same body. This verse in Romans 12 also emphasizes the unity of the body of Christ, which is composed of many different members.
