21. And the fish that [was] in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.

In Exodus 7, God begins to show His power before Pharaoh and the Egyptian people through Moses and Aaron, sending several pests over Egypt to free the Hebrews from slavery. Exodus 7:22 - "Then the wizards of Egypt did the same with their enchantments; and the heart of Pharaoh hardened, and did not hear them, as the Lord had said." Exodus 7:25 - "And seven days passed after the Lord wounded the river." This verse marks the end of the first plague, and shows how God's pests were progressively getting worse and lasting longer, intensifying the pressure on Pharaoh to release the Hebrews.
