Chapter 12 of 1 kings describes the division of the kingdom of Israel after Solomon's death when his son Roban becomes king. Jeroboam, who was a servant of Solomon, leads the rebellion and becomes the king of the Northern Kingdom, which is called Israel, while Roban rules the southern kingdom, called Judah. 1 Kings 11:11-13: "Then the Lord said to Solomon, For this in you, and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have sent you, I will surely tear to you this kingdom, and I will give it to your servant.
