2. Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of [their] fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers twelve rods: write thou every man's name upon his rod.

Numbers 17 presents the story of Aaron and his flowered rod. God commanded each leader of the twelve tribes of Israel to deposit his rod in the tabernacle so that the rod of the man who would choose flourish, indicating that this tribe would be chosen by God.
