Deuteronomy 1 is a chapter where Moses recalls the history of the Israelites since they left Egypt until they reached the border of the promised land. Deuteronomy 6:4-6 - "Hear, Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and of all thy forces. These words that I command you today will be in your heart. " Moses emphasizes the importance of loving God and keeping his commandments.

Deuteronomy 8:2-3 - "And thou shalt remind you all the way by which the Lord your God has guided you in the desert these forty years, to humiliate you, and to prove you, to know what was in your heart, if you kept your own commandments or not.
