1 Samuel, 9

2. Kish had a son named Saul, a handsome young man who had no equal among the Israelites, for he was a head taller than any of them.

Chapter 9 of 1 Samuel narrates the story of how Saul son of wanted was chosen by God to be the first king of Israel. Saul is described as an attractive but insecure young man who goes in search of his father's lost donkeys. Genesis 49:10: "The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the command rod of his descendants, until he comes to whom he belongs and whom the peoples will obey." This verse is a prophecy about the lineage of Judah, which is the tribe from which Saul and his father wanted to descend. The scepter is a symbol of real power, and this prophecy is seen as a promise of the arrival of the Messiah.

In this verse, the prophet Samuel confronts Saul for not obeying God's command to totally destroy the Amalequites and all his cattle, and for sparing King Agag. Samuel compares Saul's disobedience to idolatry and divination, and announces his rejection as king of Israel.
