8. But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which [belonged] to David, were not with Adonijah.

1 Kings 1 deals with David's succession to the throne of Israel. When David is already old and debilitated, Adonias, his eldest son, tries to usurp the throne for himself. 1 Chronicles 22:9: "Behold, a Son shall be born to you, who will be a man of rest; for I will give him rest of all his enemies around; for Solomon will be his name, and peace and peace I will give Israel in his days. 2 Samuel 23:1-2: "These are the last words of David, says David, son of Jesse, says the man who was raised at height, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the soft in Psalms of Israel. From the Lord spoke for me, and his word is in my mouth. " These verses show David's divine authority as king of Israel and, therefore, the importance of his choice of successor in 1 Kings 1.
