8. If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, [to see] whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods.

Deuteronomy 24:6 - "Thou shalt not take the hand of hand or sunshine, because that would be to take the debtor's own life." This verse addresses the question of the pledge, mentioned in Exodus 22:26-27, and highlights the importance of protecting the life and subsistence means of the debtors.
