26. And they gathered upon him a great pile of stones, which remains even to the present day. And the fury of the Lord was averted from them. And the name of that place was called the Valley of Achor, even to this day.

Joshua 7 addresses the episode in which Israel is defeated by the inhabitants of the city of Ai. This is because Achian, one of Israeli soldiers, had disobeyed God's orders not to take any of the spoils of the city of Jericho to himself. Genesis 3:11: "And God asked, 'Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat the tree from which I forbade you to eat?'" This verse speaks of the importance of obedience to God's orders. Just as God had forbidden Adam and Eve to eat from the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, He had forbidden the Israelites to take the spoils of Jericho for himself.
