8. And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "That is why we have turned to you now, that you may go with us and fight with the Ammonites, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."

Chapter 11 of the Judges Book tells the story of Jephtha, a brave warrior who was chosen as leader of his people in a time of conflict and oppression. Jephtter makes a vow to the Lord, promising that if he overcomes the battle against the Ammonites, he will sacrifice the first person who leaves his home to find him.
