Psalms, 120

1. [Song of Ascents *{* The Songs of Ascents (Pss 120-134) were sung by pilgrims on their way up to Jerusalem.} ] To Yahweh when I am in trouble I call and he answers me.

2. Yahweh, save me from lying lips and a treacherous tongue!

3. What will he repay you, what more, treacherous tongue?

4. War-arrows made sharp over red-hot charcoal.

5. How wretched I am, living in Meshech, dwelling in the tents of Kedar!

6. Too long have I lived among people who hate peace.

7. When I speak of peace they are all for war!

Psalm 120 is a psalm of lamentation that expresses the anguish and pain of the psalmist in the face of the evil and the falsehood that surrounds it. Proverbs 6:16-19: "Six things the Lord hates, and the seventh of his soul abominates: haughty eyes, liar language, hands that spill innocent blood, heart that plots wicked projects, rushing feet running to evil, False witness that utters lies and what sows strife between brothers. " This verse addresses the same question as the lying language that is addressed in Psalm 120.

James 3:5-6: "So the tongue is a small member, and boast of great things. See how great woods a small fire fire. Psalm 31:18: "Shut up before the Lord God, for the day of the Lord is close; for the Lord has prepared sacrifice, and sanctified his guests." This verse speaks of the importance of silencing before God, recognizing His holiness and power. This can be interpreted as a response to the psalmist's cry in search of divine protection in Psalm 120.

Psalm 140:1: "Deliver me, O Lord, of the evil man; keep me from the violent man." Psalm 140 is also a psalm of lamentation that calls for divine protection against the wickedness of men. It relates to Psalm 120 for expressing the same anguish and pain of the psalmist in the face of the injustice and violence that surrounds it.
